Quick and simple Turmeric Ginger Immune Boosting Shots (no juicer needed)
Spring is in the air, but cold and flu season is also in full swing. This year has been particularly hard, on many levels—underscoring the intricate connectedness of our bodies, minds, and environments. While there’s plenty that we can’t control, taking charge of the things we can, no matter how small, can be incredibly uplifting. In the case of this simple sunshiny morning (or anytime) boost, expect a zingy, empowering boost of citrus sunshine.
I hesitated about posting this simple tonic for a few reasons. The first is a little pathetic; I simply wasn’t sure what to name it. What started as a “shot” became more of a juice, having added some extra liquid to make it more pleasing to the family. It’s not juice, though—you don’t need a juicer, or any fancy equipment. You don’t really even need a recipe—just a blender and a little intuition. Which brings me to the second reason I haven’t posted this before now, which is it just seemed too obvious.
Sometimes, though, things seem obvious to us only because we are used to them. These sweet and tangy tonics have been a part of our regular routine for years now, at least throughout the winter and again during bouts with allergens. Over the holidays, my mother-in-law came to visit and landed stateside with a searing sore throat. I made her extra potent “shots” for numerous days straight, and while there may have been some placebo effect going on, she enthusiastically attributed the alleviation of pain with no cold progression with the gingery brightness. Around the same time, a friend for whom I’d brought a little jar of this immune-juice when she’d had a called asked if she could have some more to help stave off a burgeoning bug pre-race. That was all the affirmation this piquant potion needed to be posted!
”Recipe” is below, and very, very tweakable. First, the goods on some of the powerful goodness in each sip:
Ginger is brimming with anti-inflammatory properties that have made it a staple home remedy throughout the ages, easing nausea, boosting immunity, and more.
Turmeric isn’t known as the Golden Root for nothing—it’s pure gold when it comes to a wealth of helth. Key component curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits, making it renowned for joint health but also immune support, stable blood sugar, and all-around reduced inflammation.
Citrus is packed with Vitamin C, the signature soldier for fighting off colds.
Cayenne pepper, even just a pinch, lends a fiery boost that supports immune cells by activating blood flow.
There’s plenty in the world that is going to embattle us and get us down. There is plenty we have to accept that we cannot change, always. But we can most certainly do our utmost when it comes to investing in the true wealth of our health and empowering us with energy and resilience to take action where we can. Wishing you joyful rays of stregnth and citrus sunshine! xo
